We are proud of the many outstanding contributions that American Carbon Society Members have made to science, engineering and technology. We offer a range of prestigious awards and invite our members to download a nomination form and nominate outstanding contributions in our field. Previous awardees are listed below:
The Carbon Medal – For Achievement in Carbon Science and Technology: outstanding contributions to the discovery of novel carbon products or processes.
SGL Carbon (Skakel) Award – For overall contributions and achievements that have significantly influenced the progress of carbon science and/or technology. Nomination Form
Charles E. Pettinos Award – For recent outstanding research accomplishments of an individual or group in carbon science and/or technology. Nomination Form
Peter A. Thrower Award – For distinguished contributions that have significantly influenced the advancement of research in carbon science and/or technology and have contributed to the collaboration of carbon researchers worldwide. Nomination Form
AmCarbSoc Fellow Award – Nomination Form
Mrozowski Award – For best oral presentation by a student at international carbon conferences organized and/or sponsored by the American Carbon Society.
Walker Award – For best poster presentation by a student at international carbon conferences organized and/or sponsored by the American Carbon Society.
Robert A. Meyer Award – A travel grant for a graduate student or research associate to present a paper at an American Carbon Conference, preferably on carbon fibers or filamentous carbon, with special emphasis on characterization of their micro- or nano-structure. Nomination Form
Carbon Journal Prize – Awarded by the journal Carbon, and its publisher Elsevier, for an outstanding PhD thesis in carbon material science and technology.Nomination Form
Special Recognition Awards – Awarded by the American Carbon Society for outstanding service to the society and membership.
Graffin Lecture Series – The American Carbon Society, supported by grants from Asbury Carbons, sponsors a lecture series at North American universities in honor of George D. Graffin, a pioneer in the natural graphite industry. Each year, the Society selects a lecturer who has made distinguished contributions to carbon science and engineering.

Peter A. Thrower Award
“… distinguished contributions and accomplishments of an individual that have significantly influenced the advancement of research in the science and technology of carbon materials and have contributed to the collaboration of carbon researchers worldwide.”
Michio Inagaki (2011): The accomplishments of Professor Inagaki encompass his prolific and outstanding scientific work as well as his tireless efforts in fostering international cooperation over the past 48 years. His hundreds of publications, reviews and books, in almost a dozen distinct research areas, are extremely impressive, as are his efforts in organizing and coordinating the activities that culminated in the formation of the Asian Association of Carbon Groups.
